Hubert E. McGovern, 87, of Wilkes-Barre passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at The Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas, after a brief stay, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Mountain Top on March 20, 1925, a son of the late John and Helen Berilla McGovern. Hubert was a graduate of Fairview High School, Class of 1943. He was employed as a clerk by the Central Railroad of New Jersey and by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Conrail, prior to his retirement in 1985. Hugh was later employed by Ertley Motor World and by Nationwide Car Sales.

Mr. McGovern was a member of St. Andrew's Parish in Wilkes-Barre. Prior to its closing, he was a longtime member of St. Boniface Church and its Holy Name Society. Hugh was also a member of the Central Railroad of New Jersey veteran employee association and a former member of the Catholic Knights of St. George, Branch No. 75.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Jeannette Wanto McGovern, in 2010. He was also preceded in death by his son-in-law, David Cordaro; and by his brothers, Thomas, William and Leonard (Butch) McGovern.

Surviving are children, Marie Dougherty and her husband, Gary, Shavertown; Michael McGovern and his wife, Mary, Holbrook, Mass.; Attorney Catherine A. McGovern, Freeland; grandchildren, Sean and Ryan McGovern; brother, John (Sam) McGovern, Mountain Top; sister, Helen McGovern, Mountain Top; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew's Parish, 316 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.

Friends may call from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
