Irene A. Gatusky, 94, formerly a resident of Ashley, died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Mountain Top Senior Care and Rehabilitation Center, Wright Township, where she had been a guest since 2012.

Mrs. Gatusky was born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Clem and Julie Jablonski Welnoski, and was a graduate of the Class of 1938, Ashley High School, and was class salutatorian. She was also a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Business College, Class of 1940, and had been employed as a lead loan clerk by the former Ashley Bank and its successors for many years.
Irene had been a former member of Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch, and of its ladies societies. She was a member of Our Lady of Hope Parish, Wilkes-Barre.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Gatusky Sr.; a son, John J. Gatusky Jr.
Surviving are her son, Mark M. Gatusky; grandsons, Mark Gatusky and his wife, Melissa; Matthew Gatusky; great-granddaughter, Jaclyn Alexandra Gatusky; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Friday from H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Church (St. Mary's Maternity Worship Center), Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Irene was an avid reader and, in view of her interest, the family requests flowers be omitted and memorial donations be made in her name to the Osterhout Free Library, 71 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
