Irene D. Katyl, 81, of Trucksville passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, surrounded by her family.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Irene was the daughter of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Hoolick Lovendusky. She was a graduate of GAR High School, Class of 1949.

Irene held a variety of jobs throughout her life including working at J.C. Penney for a number of years following the Agnes flood in 1972. She was a nursing aide at the former Valley Crest Nursing Home, Plains Township, and had also been employed by the Back Mountain Memorial Library and loved its annual auction. Irene had most recently worked at Jewish Family Services of Greater Wilkes-Barre as a receptionist and in a clerical capacity.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed bowling and participated in a number of bowling leagues over the years. A talented musician, she played the piano and organ. She also loved to sing and was a member of the Dallas Choral Group.

A resident of the Back Mountain area for most of her life, Irene was a member of St. Therese's Church, Shavertown.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents, was daughter, Nadine Katyl; son, Michael Katyl; brothers, Joseph Lovendusky and Stephen Lovett; sister, Stephanie Lovendusky.

Surviving are sons, Robert Katyl, Dallas; David Katyl and wife, Debra, Dallas; William Katyl and wife, Cynthia, Dallas; Mark Katyl and wife, Linda, Dallas; daughter, Donna Butler, Trucksville; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie Yuknavage, Dolores Martin and Barbara Keiderling.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Therese's Church, Pioneer Avenue and Davis Street, Shavertown. The Rev. James J. Paisley will officiate. Interment will be made in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton. The Katyl family will receive friends in the church from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Back Mountain Memorial Library, 96 Huntsville Road, Dallas, PA 18612-1829, or to the SPCA of Luzerne County, 524 E. Main St., Fox Hill Road, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main Street, Shavertown.
