Janet E. Grainger, 59, of Nanticoke, passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018.

Jan was raised in State College and was the daughter of Karl and Patricia Shipp Rekas.

During her high school years, she was active in roller skating, marching band silks and the color guard. She went on to graduate from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Still following her passion for the "Silks," she became director of the State College High School and Lewiston marching band silks.

After moving to Myrtle Beach, S.C., she met her husband of 30 years, Michael Grainger. His service in the U.S. Army took them to Williamsburg, Va., and then to Germany for three years. At the Army post in Kiserslautern, Germany, Jan served as the gift shop manager at the skating rink. She was able to travel in Europe, visiting countries related to her heritage. Since she grew up having at least a pair of dachshunds in the house, Germany seemed quite fitting.

Jan returned to Nanticoke, a place she had visited many times to see her grandparents, Jack and Agnes Shipp, to care for her ill mother. She was full of life and happiness and had a great capacity for caring for others. Even after suffering a stroke in November 2013, Jan made sure to give those people she was in contact with what she called the blessing. She wanted to share the good feeling it brought with others.

In addition to her husband, Michael, surviving are Julia and Dave Goins; Carl and Marti Grainger, Joy and Ret Stevenson, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sister, Tricia Duncan and family, Huntington Valley; and loving cousins, nieces and nephews.
