John Zidek Obituary

John M. Zidek Sr., 66, of Shickshinny, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017, at Berwick Retirement Village II after a one-month stay.

John was born Dec. 18, 1950, a son of the late William and Mary Slavick Zidek, Mocanaqua.

He graduated from the former Newport High School, Class of 1968.

John served in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought for our country's freedom in Vietnam. Among many medals he received were the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Rifle Marksman Badge. He was also awarded the Medal of Heroism for his many efforts as a combat soldier.

John was a self-employed contractor and his expertise in carpentry was very much appreciated.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish/St. Mary's Church, Polish Falcons Nest 163, and the Sporting Club, all of Mocanaqua.

He was also a member of American Legion Post 495, Shickshinny and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8317, Benton.

He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister, Anna Mae Karchner; and a brother, Ralph Orzechowski, both of Berwick.

John will be sadly missed by his sons, John Zidek Jr. and his wife, Dawn; and Jason Zidek; grandchildren, Alycia, Seth, and Emily Rose Zidek; a precious great-granddaughter, Scarlet Rose Smith; his brother, William Zidek and his wife Bette; and his sister, Leona Sherrick.

He will also be sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Uncle Johnny adored each and every one of you.

He also leaves behind his cat, Griffen.

Always loved you, love you still, always have and always will. Rest in peace John.

A time of visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in Mayo Funeral Home Inc., 77 N. Main St., Shickshinny.

A prayer service will be conducted by the Rev. Louis Kaminski at the funeral home at noon, followed by a military service by a combined veterans group.
