John P. Gabriele Sr., 84, of Mountain Top passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2018, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born July 8, 1933, in Wilkes-Barre, to the late Vincenzo and Caterina Colletti Gabriele.

John was a faithful member of St. Mary's Church, Dorrrance Twp.; the Knights of Columbus, Mountain Top Council; Fourth-Degree Knights of Columbus Bishop Hafey Assembly, Wilkes-Barre; Lions International, Mountain Top; and a member of the Academy of Certified Polygraphists, New York, N.Y.

John graduated from Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and Wyoming Valley Seminary, Kingston. He attended the Pratt-Whitney Aircraft School in New Haven, Conn., trained at RCA Semiconductor Quality Control and attended the Scientific Lie Detection School of Polygraph, New York, N.Y.

Throughout his career he was employed by major international companies, including ITE Circuit Breaker, Burroughs Research Laboratory and RCA Semiconductor. He went on to work at Boeing Vertol Co. in Malvern, providing supervision and direction in the experimental area working in their engineers in developing the first four armored Chinook helicopters. He conducted this project at the Marine Air facilities in Tustin, Calif., and New River, N.C. At the facility they received severely damaged helicopters from the Vietnam War zone, rebuilding the crafts to an airworthy condition.

John founded many businesses locally, including Radio Paging of N.E. PA and A-1 Telephone Answering Service, offering pocket paging and telephone answering service. He created J.P. Gabriele Detective Agency, providing security consultations, investigations and Polygraph services for local businesses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincenzo and Caterina Colletti Gabriele, Campobello di Mazara, Trapani, Italy; and his brothers, Phillip Gabriele, Wilkes-Barre; and Angelo Gabriele, Wilkes-Barre.

He is survived by his wife, Theresa M. Gabriele (Pohutski), of 46 years; children, Vincent Gabriele, Wilkes-Barre; Felicia Gabriele-Bagnato, Pittston: John P. Gabriele Jr., Wilkes-Barre; and Catherine Gabriele; grandchildren, Rebecca Gabriele, Wilkes-Barre; Rachael Gabriele, Nanticoke; John Bagnato Jr., West Point, Va.; Joseph Bagnato, Pittston; Anthony Gabriele, Nanticoke; Isabella Gabriele, Wilkes-Barre; and Spencer Gabriele, Dallas; great-granddaughters, Adeline Gabriele and Alessa Bagnato, Pittston; and cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Jude's Parish, Mountain Top.

Everyone may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc., Nanticoke.

John will be laid to rest at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
