Joseph J. Konopka, 91, of Swoyersville passed away Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, in the Gino V. Merli Veterans Center in Scranton.

Born in Wyoming, on July 19, 1922, he was the son of the late Phillip and Katherine Yurek Konopka. He grew up in Wyoming and had lived in Bloomfield, N.J., for many years.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church of St. Monica's Parish, Wyoming.

Joe was an army veteran of World War II. He belonged to the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life member of the Wyoming Hose Company No. 2.

Prior to his retirement, he worked as a machinist in New Jersey and at Medico Industries in Plains Township.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Huntz Konopka; brothers, Louis, who was killed in action in World War II; George "Whitey" and Jacob; sisters, Mary Mazur and Jennie Chimock.

Surviving are his niece, Mary Ann Hermanos, Bethlehem; nephews, Stanley Chimock, Dallas; and Robert Konopka, Plains Township; numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by other close relatives, Daniel and Ann Marie Huntz, Long Valley, N.J.; Alfred Banks, Stroudsburg; Betty Huntz, Weston, W.Va.; and Eleanor Polk, Wyoming.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday from Bednarski Funeral Home, 168 Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, with a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Monica's Parish, 363 W. Eighth St., West Wyoming, with the Rev. Leo McKernan officiating.

Interment will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery, West Wyoming. Military services will be conducted by the AMVETS Honor Guard of Greater Pittston.

Friends may call 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
