Joseph P. Backo of Exeter died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Joseph and Lottie Backo.

Joe was a graduate of Swoyersville High School, Class of 1957.

He was an Army veteran serving in Korea.

Prior to retiring in 2004 due to illness he was employed for 40 years by C.W. Schultz and Son of Wilkes-Barre.

Joe served the Exeter Lions Club as president for two terms and also served as club secretary. He was scout leader with Exeter Cub Scout Pack 310 for 35 years. He served as a committee member with Troop 311 and was in charge of the camping program. He was a life member of the former Exeter Park Volunteer Fire Company. Joe served his church in countless bazaars at St. John the Baptist and St. Cecilia's.

After his illness left him unable to drive, Joe could be seen traveling around town in his Jazzy. He made many friends and Joe was an incredibly kind person who would help anyone, friend or stranger. Joe was a loving husband, father, brother and the world's best Gramps.

Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Lorraine Kolojejchick; children, Daniel (Eleanor) Backo, Catherine (Phil) White and Peg (Dr. Edward) Schwartz; grandchildren, Olivia White, Seth White and Anna Schwartz; and a brother, Michael (Mary) Backo, Wallington, N.J.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday from Lehman-Gregory Funeral Home Inc., 281 Chapel St., Swoyersville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church, Exeter.

Interment will be held in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Exeter.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
