Mary Ann McDermott, 61, of Moosic died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Commonwealth Hospice Unit at the Regional Hospital of Scranton while under the care of Hospice of the Sacred Heart. She was surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of Donald McDermott, who died Jan. 10, 2007.

Born in Dupont, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Gill Karkut, she was a 1970 graduate of Riverside High School. Prior to her illness, she was employed for many years in the banking and financial field. She was a parishioner of Prince of Peace Parish, Old Forge.

Mary Ann possessed a tremendous work ethic and loved gardening, baking and embroidering. She was a loving and devoted mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend. Since the death of her husband, she missed him terribly every single day. Even still, she had joys in her life, having had children, grandchildren and family whom she adored. Her family would like to express its gratitude to Dr. Anees Fogley, whose care and compassion will never be forgotten. A sincere acknowledgement also goes out to the staff of Commonwealth Hospice at the Regional Hospital of Scranton, the staff of Skilled Nursing, the nurses of 8 East, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

Surviving are a son, Jason McDermott, and wife, Donielle; a daughter, Megan McDermott Sweeney, and husband, Scott, all of Moosic; three sisters, Gloria Schmitt, and husband, William, Moosic; Barbara Ransom, and husband, Dale, Scranton; and Diana Tabor, and husband, Gerald, Moosic; four grandchildren, Brandon, Jade, Madison and Ayden McDermott; an uncle, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Connor McDermott.
