Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Schalles, 91, a former longtime resident of Church Street, Kingston, passed away Friday morning, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Inpatient Unit at Hospice Community Care, Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre.

Born July 21, 1922 in Berwick, she was the daughter of late Charles and Eva May (Stokke) Frey, Betty moved to Kingston in 1938. She married her beloved Bill on July 24, 1942 and was an anchor for him during his years of military service in Europe and Korea. An energetic and loving homemaker, she was also employed by the Wilkes-Barre Postal Federal Credit Union before retiring in 1982.
Betty was also a volunteer at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital for many years. In their later years, she and her Bill enjoyed traveling, evenings at Kirby Arts Center, doting on grandchildren and simply being together. An avid sports fan, Betty loved her Phillies and Saturday trips in the fall to see her beloved Nittany Lions as a longtime season ticket holder.
Betty was also a faithful member of the Church of Christ Uniting in Kingston since 1938. She was active there for decades in mission, worship and youth leadership activities.
She was predeceased by a son, John William; and a daughter, Mary Elizabeth.
She is survived by her devoted husband and companion of 71 years, John W. (Bill) Schalles; daughter, Amy Louise Gyory, Forty Fort; son, Mark Charles and his wife, Laura, Montville, N.J.; John F. Gyory, Exeter; grandchildren, Michael J. and Jennifer Mioduski, Wyoming; John A. Gyory and Amanda Gross, Forty Fort; Eric and Luke Schalles, Montville, N.J.; her loving sister, Evelyn Crane and husband, Conrad, Kingston; sisters-in-law, Joyce Trentholm, Nescopeck; Mary Ann Schalles, Bloomsburg; Madelyn Williams, Signal Mountain, Tenn.; and Ethel Balliet, Bloomsburg; brothers-in-law, Robert Schalles, Bethlehem; and Craig Schalles, Orangeville.
Funeral services for Betty will be private and held at the convenience of the family, followed by interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Park in Dallas. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the care of Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort.
