Matthew John James, 24, of Hanover Twp., entered into eternal life on Monday, Nov. 5, 2018. His loving dog, Brody, surrounded him.

Born at the Naval Hospital, San Diego, Calif., he was the son of Genevieve O'Boyle James, Salem, Ore., and Rocky James, Fort Yukon, Alaska.

Matthew was a graduate of E.L. Meyers High School, Class of 2012, and King's College, Class of 2016, where he earned his bachelor's degree in athletic training.

He was employed by Pro Rehab, Hanover Twp., as an exercise therapist and by Vesuvios as a cook.

Matthew was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Pro-Cathedral Church, South Franklin Street, Wilkes-Barre, where he served as an acolyte for seven years and was a member of their children's choir.

Matthew will be best remembered for his love of family gatherings and was thankful to share these times with his loved ones. Matthew would always greet everyone with his special hugs and his beautiful smile. He had a unique way of touching everyone who was in his presence by his kind and loving ways. His caring nature for others also showed as he was an avid animal lover and was a believer in animal rescue. Brody, is not only his rescue dog, but is his best friend until they meet again.

Matthew's love for sports led him to be an outstanding athlete from a young age. He was gifted and mastered any sport he participated in. His teamwork was impeccable and showed with the many accomplishments he achieved.

He was a member of St. Theresa's Little League where he was awarded an All-Star position. Matthew carried out his soccer talents as a member of many local travel and school teams while attending Wilkes-Barre Area schools.

His passion for the sport rewarded him with a scholarship to King's College. He also had a passion for tennis, where he played for Meyers and King's College. Matthew was a true athlete and he paid it forward with his volunteer coaching of young children at Kirby Tennis Courts. He also was a coach for Special Olympics in State College while attending Kings.

Matthew was preceded in death by his brother, John Roberts; and aunt, Debi O'Boyle.

He is survived by his mother, Jennie James, Salem, Ore.; father, Rocky James, Fort Yukon, Alaska; brother, Kyle James, Winchester, Va.; brother, Aaron James, Wisconsin; sister, Sasha James, Wisconsin; grandparents, Sebastian and Jenny Vitale, Wilkes-Barre; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 35 S. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, followed by a gathering in the church auditorium.

Friends are invited to pay their respects and honor Matthew's life from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth.
