Philip J. Gilroy, 82, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Twp. He was born Aug. 11, 1935, in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late Philip and Mildred Bowers Gilroy.

He attended the Wilkes-Barre schools and left school to pursue a boxing career and became a lightweight champion. He was later employed in the shipping industry on the Great Lakes and also worked at several local factories before obtaining a position at InterMetro Industries.

Philip was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He also participated in the local bowling leagues and was always smiling.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Gilroy.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Geisinger Hospital for taking excellent care of Philip and special thanks to Josie for staying by his side during his last moments.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Joan Pavlak Gilroy; children, Lisa Gilroy, Philip Gilroy, Linda Gilroy; grandchildren, Samantha, Thomas, Bella, Nicole, Max; sister, Rebecca Rushton, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Mass which will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Plains Twp. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.eblakecollins.com.
