Rita L. Hallas, 90, formerly of West Ridge Street, Nanticoke, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke.

Born Sept. 11, 1922, in Nanticoke, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Nellie Splett Maylock. She was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, Class of 1940, and the Dean School of Business of Wyoming Seminary in 1942.

Rita was employed as a bookkeeper by Bergman's Department Store and had co-owned Hallas Dry Cleaners for 60 years. She had been a foster mother to 75 children over a 43-year period of time.

In 1982, she was presented with a Humanitarian Award.

She was preceded in death in 1997 by her husband of 52 years, George P. Hallas; a daughter, Georgine, in 2003; son, George A. Hallas, in 2010; brother, Henry Maylock; and sisters, Nell Zieminski and Theresa Ficarra.

Surviving are sons, Gerard Hallas, Jody John Hallas and his wife, Margaret, and Francis Bogdan and his wife, Sue; daughters, Denise Caley and Patrice Bobbin and her husband, Henry; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in the main site of St. Faustina's Parish, 520 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Nanticoke. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Donations may be made to St. Faustina's Parish.
