Ruth Elizabeth Butler Melton, 83, passed away suddenly at City Heights Apartments, Wilkes-Barre, where she resided, on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013.

She was born Dec. 11, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, and remained a life resident of the Heights section of the city. She was the daughter of the late James and Ruth Butler.
Ruth was a graduate of St. Mary's School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1947.
She was employed as a school crossing guard, retiring in 1994.
She was an excellent roller skater, spending many hours at the Roller Dome, Kingston. Ruth enjoyed watching action movies and was an avid reader. She was excellent at solving crossword puzzles and always knew all of the answers. Ruth loved animals and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Sonny, James, William and Charles.
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Bednar and her husband, David, Mountain Top; and Marianne Williams, Harveys Lake; son, John Kearney and wife, Barbara, Plains Township; grandchildren, John Kearney Jr., James Kearney, Melissa Kizer, Bernie Williams Jr., David Bednar, Daniel Bednar, William Bednar and Kelly Bednar; and great-grandchildren, Sydney and Mackenzie Kearney, Addison Kearney and Nathan Kizer.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jendrzejewski Funeral Home, 21 N. Meade St., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. James C. Quinn will be officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
