Sally S. Horny, 78, a resident of Penn Lake, passed away in her sleep Friday, July 5, 2013 at her home, following a lengthy illness.

She was born in Wilkes-Barre, on May 14, 1935, a daughter of the late John and Margaret E. Tarutis Shimko. She was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School and had been employed as an office manager by Manpower Inc. while residing in East Orange, N.J.

Sally and her husband, Joseph, later moved to the White Haven area where she became very active within the community by opening Sally's Ceramic Studio and then the White Haven Bakery. She also served as the code and zoning officer for Penn Lake Park Borough. Sally was a member of St. Patrick's Church, White Haven, and always was an active woman who also had several other business interests.

Sally loved music, dance and singing. She was always willing to sing for the weddings of many relatives and friends. She once won third place at a senior citizen talent contest at Mohegan Sun Casino.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Fawver; and by a nephew, Jack Fawver.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Joseph G. Horny; and by a brother, Robert Shimko, Port Charlotte, Fla. Also surviving are sisters, Margaret Smith, Toms River, N.J.; and Charlotte Liparela, Wilkes-Barre. She was greatly loved by her family and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 580 Elmira St., White Haven, with the Rev. Christopher Washington as celebrant. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Blue Chip Farm Animal Refuge, 974 Lockville Road, Dallas, PA 18612.
