Shirley J. Whitney, 86, widow of the Rev. Robert Whitney of Nanticoke, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 12, 2018, at Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke, following a brief illness.

Born Jan. 20, 1932, she was one of nine children of the late Daniel and Ethel Shale DeRemer and was raised in Sweet Valley. She married Robert D. Whitney on Jan. 26, 1952.

They lived in numerous locations in New York State as well as the East Coast where her late husband served as a Baptist minister and teacher in Christian schools and colleges. Following retirement, they lived in Berwick, Florida and North Carolina, returning to live at Park Towers in Nanticoke in 2011.

In addition to assisting her husband in ministry throughout the years, she had been employed as a nursing assistant, did secretarial jobs, including working in claims for an insurance company for many years in Quakertown.

She was a member of Nebo Baptist Church, Nanticoke, and the adult Sunday School Class. She enjoyed time spent with the other residents of Park Towers and especially playing Yatzee.

Her husband passed on Aug. 4, 2013. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Wilbur, Paul, Robert and William and Herbert DeRemer; and sisters, Mae Bedford and Joan Scholl.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen Gibson (Pat), Shickshinny; a son, Timothy Whitney, Wilkes-Barre; grandchildren, Sean Gibson (Rebecca), with whom she resided for the past year in Hunlock Creek; Kevin Gibson (Monica), Hunlock Creek; Erin Kopko (Tony Sr.), Larksville; and Jamie Brennan (Todd), Erie; great-grandsons, Casey Brennan, Jace Gibson and Tony Kopko Jr.; a sister, Arline Rittenhouse, Nanticoke; as well as nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with Pastor Timothy G. Hall, officiating.

A viewing and visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of service Friday.

Private interment will be in Carverton Cemetery.
