Sydney O. Evans, 99, of Duryea passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Allied Services Skilled Nursing Center, Scranton, where he was a resident.

He was born in Scranton on Oct. 26, 1914, and was the son of the late Charles and Evangeline McIlwee Evans.

Syd was a member of Jackson Street Baptist Church, Scranton. He attended Scranton schools.

Syd, an over-the-road truck driver, retired after 45 years of driving for Rogers Trucking, Scranton, and finally Branch Motors, Wilkes-Barre. Syd was a member of Teamsters 401, Wilkes-Barre, and a charter member of Teamsters 229, Scranton.

As a young man, he enjoyed playing sandlot baseball and football. Later in life he excelled in bowling and loved to fish, year-round.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Joan Musewicz Evans, who died in 1991; his daughter, Maribeth (Betsy) Bauman; and his brothers, Charles, Marshall and Robert.

He is survived by his daughter, Judith Coleman and her husband, Paul, Duryea; and grandchildren, David Johndrow and his wife, Mariarose, John Bauman, Andrea Carper and her husband, Bryan, Mark and his wife, Paula Johndrow, Syd Bauman, Stephanie Coleman, Jessica Henkels and her husband, Mark, and Jef and his wife, Amanda Bauman. Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1206 Jackson St., Scranton, with the Rev. Michael Sunseri officiating.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.

Family and friends are asked to go directly to Jackson Street Baptist Church. There will be no procession from the funeral home.

Interment will be held in Washburn Street Cemetery, Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1206 Jackson St., Scranton. PA 18504, or to Allied Skilled Nursing Center, 303 Smallacombe Drive, Scranton, PA 18508.
