Thomas J. Austin Jr., 46, of Bear Creek Township died unexpectedly Dec. 27, 2012, at his residence.

Mr. Austin was born in Wilkes-Barre on Feb. 26, 1966, a son of Margaret B. Maguire Austin and the late Thomas J. Austin Sr. He was a graduate of Coughlin High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from King's College. He had been employed as a safety instructor by the PPL Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant for many years.
Mr. Austin was a Pennsylvania State Fire Academy Instructor and a founding member of the Bear Creek/Buck Township Ambulance Association. He also was a member of the Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department where he has held the position of fire chief. He also was a member of the Plains Volunteer Ambulance Association and Rescue Company 211.
Surviving are his mother, Margaret B. Austin, Bear Creek; brother, Peter R. Austin and his wife, Laurie, Bear Creek Village; and by a sister, Margaret B. Austin and her husband, Frank Dupak, Bear Creek; also nieces, Ashley Elizabeth and Lauren Victoria Austin, Bear Creek Village.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Joseph A. Kearney, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Bear Creek.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Funeral Home.
