Thomas J. McAvoy, age 82, of Hanover Twp. and formerly Kingston, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was born in Wilkes Barre on Dec. 13, 1936, the son of the late Harold and Barbara Heylek McAvoy. He was a member of the graduating class of 1954 of Kingston High School.

Thomas was proud to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as a staff sergeant from 1955 to 1958 and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed at Dana Perfume, Mountain Top as a receiving supervisor and also in the maintenance department at Hanover Area School District, until his retirement in 2012.

Thomas was a member of the Ashley American Legion Post 673 and the Marine Corps League 1039, White Haven, where he served as commandant. He was a member, since 1984, of the Wyoming Valley Detachment Marine Corps League, Miner Mills and a member of the Marine Corps Rifle team, White Haven.

Preceding him in death was his sister, Barbara Galabinski.

Surviving are his wife of 14 years, the former Diane Roberts, at home; sons, Thomas McAvoy and his wife, Diane, Berwick; Timothy McAvoy, Hanover Twp.; Arthur McAdarra, Wilkes Barre; and Kyle McAdarra, Dallas; five grandchildren, Alexander, Aleece McAvoy, Candy Fisher, Kylie and Liam McAdarra; one great-grandchild, Keith Fisher; and two nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday from St. Mary's Cemetery Chapel, 1594 S. Main St., Hanover Twp., with military services. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
