Born on April 30, 1965, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of Thurman Hayes of Scranton and the late Evelyn DeGraffenreid Hayes.
Douglas attended the Hanover Area schools and resided in the Wilkes-Barre area all of his life. He was a graduate of MTA Truck Driving School in 1986 and was employed as a truck driver for several companies over the years. Douglas enjoyed a special friendship with his father, and along with him was an avid fisherman. He will especially be remembered for his love of family and being a hard worker.
Surviving, in addition to his father, is his stepmother, Patricia Hayes; companion of 20 years, Grace Rovelli and her children; former wife, Audrey Hayes; 3 children, Jarita James, Kingston; Douglas Hayes Jr., Parsons; and Jamar Hayes, serving with the U.S. Army; 3 grandchildren; brothers, Billy Joe Degraffenreid and companion, Bonnie Wysocki, Nanticoke; Thurman Hayes and his wife, Carleena, Manteca, Calif.; Jordan Hayes and Eddie Hunt, both of Scranton; Michael Nenish, Dickson City; and Kenneth Hayes, Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Yvonne DeGraffenreid, Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and Monica Hayes and companion, Kathy Jones, Wilkes-Barre; and Shannon Osbourne, Scranton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St., Nanticoke, with his aunt, Evangelist Bonita DeGraffenreid, Stubbs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Macon, Ga., officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Douglas's memory may be made to his family.
