Edward Nowakowski, 95, of Hanover Green, Hanover Township, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Little Flower Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre.

Ed was born in Nanticoke on June 28, 1918, and was the son of the late Andrew and Lillian Nowakowski.

He was a member of Exaltation of the Holy Cross Parish, Hanover Township, where he attended church services faithfully with his wife, Olga, until her passing. Ed continued his devotion to his faith at the parish until he transferred his residence to St. Therese Assisted Living at 89 years old.

Ed attended school in Nanticoke and joined the Army to serve in the 11th Division of the Tank Corps during World War II. He achieved the rank of sergeant and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

After the war, Ed became one of the favorite haberdashers at the popular Stanley Januski's Men's Clothing Store in Nanticoke.

After marrying Olga Galaida, Ed served as the mixologist at the once-popular Galaida's Family Restaurant on the Sans Souci Highway in Hanover Green and his wife, Olga, became the main chef.

Later in Ed's life, he was the bar manager for Boris's, where he entertained the patrons with well-known trivia that he verified from his library of Quick Facts.

One of his greatest loves was being a member of the Wyoming Valley Country Club, where he spent many hours enjoying countless rounds of golf and kibbitzing with his buddies. He shot his first hole-in-one in 1964 and was the recipient of numerous tournament wins. He was the oldest living member of the club.

In addition to his wife, Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Gene and wife, Helen Nowakowski, and his sister, Isabelle and husband, Ed Pashinski.

Surviving are six nieces and nephews, 11 great-nieces and great-nephews, and 14 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Funeral services will start at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Charles Sherbin Funeral Home, Main Road, Hanover Green. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. at Exaltation of the Holy Cross Parish, 420 Main Road, Hanover Green. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Way of Wyoming Valley, 8 W. Market St., Suite 450, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701, in memory of Edward Nowakowski.
