Bernardine V. Kalna of Swoyersville passed away peacefully Thursday morning, Jan. 16, 2014.

Born Oct. 20, 1928, in Wilkes-Barre, Bernardine was the daughter of the late John and Veronica Greytak Iskra.
Raised in Wilkes-Barre, she was a 1946 graduate of St. Nicholas High School. She furthered her education at College Misericordia, acquiring her bachelor degree in social work in 1950.
She was married for 44 years to her beloved husband, Joseph J. Kalna, who passed away June 4, 2001.
Bernardine was a longtime member of the former Holy Trinity Church, Swoyersville. Active within her church, she served as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and enjoyed cooking for the parish's annual bazaar. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Holy Family Parish, Luzerne.
In addition to her husband and parents, Bernardine was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Joseph and Cyril Iskra.
Bernardine is survived by her children, Michael Kalna (Karen), Stafford, Va.; Dr. Mark Kalna (Laura), Newburg, Ind.; Paul Kalna (Michelle), Shavertown; Karen Blum (Dr. Richard), Kingston; and Dr. Chris Kalna, Dallas; her grandchildren, Andrew (Amanda), Katie, Matthew, Madelyn, Olivia, Chloe, Shane, Josh, Zack, Miranda and Levi Kalna; Michael (Rachel) Blum; and her siblings, Monica Rydzewski, Sister M. Teresita Iskra, SSCM, Ann Smolko, Thomas Iskra and Stephen Iskra.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Thursday from Wroblewski Funeral Home Inc., 1442 Wyoming Ave., Forty Fort, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, officiated by the Rev. Michael J. Zipay, at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Parish, 574 Bennett St., Luzerne.
Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
Family and friends are invited to Bernardine's viewing from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
