Jean K. Nelligan, 74, of Harveys Lake, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, as the result of a serious automobile accident.

Born in Clermont, Fla., she was the daughter of Edythe Brinen Kessler of Tampa, Fla., and the late Simon Kessler.

She was a graduate of Plant High School, Tampa, Fla., and was a member of Temple B'nai B'rith, Kingston, the Harveys Lake Women's Club and other civic and religious organizations.

She was a very unselfish and generous person, who was known fondly as "Mrs. Rum Cake," due to the thousands of rum cakes she had baked.

In addition to her mother, Jean is survived by her loving husband, former U.S. Representative for the 11th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, James L. Nelligan; son, James C. Nelligan and his wife, Joanne, Dallas; two grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Nelligan; brother, Martin Kessler, Tampa, Fla.; sister, Beverly Kessler Fruit and her husband, Melvyn, Jacksonville, Fla.; niece and nephew, Lori A. Fruit and Andrew J. Fruit and his wife, Julie; and great-nephews, Michael I. Fruit and Samuel Fruit.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Rosenberg Funeral Chapel Inc., 348 S. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rabbi Roger Lerner officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
