Heavenly blue skies overspread Northeastern Pennsylvania the morning of Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, as Josephine Golanowski Broski, 87, entered the embrace of the angels and Jesus, after an enduring illness.
The Guest Book is expired.
Josephine, formerly of Alden, a resident of Smith Assisted Living in Mountain Top, is remembered as an earthly angel, a woman of unshakable faith and of oceans-deep love of her family.
She was married for 57 years to her husband, William, a World War II hero, who passed in 2002. She leaves, with love, her sister, Genevieve Bartuski, Nanticoke; brother, Leonard Golanowski, Hartford, Conn.; daughters, Dolores Fields and husband, Robert, Drums; Marie Castagna and husband, John, Belcamp, Md.; Gloria Hrobak, Boston, Mass.; and granddaughter, Jessica Fields, San Francisco, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, August and Agnes; sisters, Mary Dreyfus and Ann Baretta; and brothers, John Sledziak, Edward, Stanley and Casimier Golanowski.
During World War II, she played semi-pro softball for the Nanticoke White Owl Cigar factory-sponsored women's team. A woman of strong Catholic faith, she was a member of Holy Trinity Church in Nanticoke for many years. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Slipikus Women's Auxiliary, Glen Lyon. She is remembered for her volunteerism at Holy Child Nursing Home in Alden, and at church picnics there. In younger days, she sang in St. Anthony's Church choir in Belleville, N.J.
At home in Alden, she loved making pigs in the blanket and other Polish foods. She was energized by bus trips to Atlantic City casinos and visits to Mohegan Sun with her daughters. She lived for a time after the death of her husband at Park Towers, Nanticoke, where she found new talents in arts and crafts projects.
A public viewing will take place at Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home Inc., 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke, from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Prayers for her repose will take place at the funeral home at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, followed by a celebration Mass of Christian Burial in St. Faustina Parish, primary site, Holy Trinity Church, Nanticoke, at noon.
