Filomena Sharpe Mancuso, 60, of Church Street, Kingston, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at her home after a courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born Feb. 8, 1954, at Nanticoke State Hospital, she was the daughter of the late William R. and Louise Cerbara Sharpe. She graduated from John S. Fine High School, Nanticoke, Class of 1972. In high school Filomena earned the Betty Crocker Award and ultimately this led to her entering the Home Economics Teacher Education program at College Misericordia. She graduated in 1976 with a BS in Home Economics Education. She continued her education at Marywood College, graduating in 1982 with a MS in Foods and Nutrition.
Filomena began her teaching career in 1976 at Bishop O'Reilly High School teaching Home Economics. She then returned to her Alma Mater, to teach for the next 34 years in the Greater Nanticoke Area school district as a Junior High and High School Home Economics teacher. In 1999, in addition to Home Economics, she became the teacher of the gifted students. She loved every aspect of teaching and was especially proud of her students and their many accomplishments. Her happiest moments were when her students excelled. She retired in 2012 when her health no longer permitted her to continue teaching.
On July 3, 1982, Filomena married the love of her life and best friend, Ralph Mancuso Jr., and together they had three wonderful children. She was very active in their activities which included being a Girl Scout leader for 13 years and a Cub and Boy Scouts leader and committee member for over 12 years. She taught Sunday School and was very involved in the many activities of her children's school and other organizations.
Her professional memberships include Pennsylvania State, National and Greater Nanticoke Area Education Associations and PSEA Retired Association.
Filomena's most cherished part of her life was her family. She liked going on family vacations, especially Disney, and to the shore. She loved having the holiday meals with her family and always had "too much" but always said that "too much was better than not enough." She also liked cooking, reading, crocheting and just sitting and enjoying her flower garden and feeding the birds.
She was preceded in death by both parents in 1986 and her mother also passed on from pancreatic cancer.
Surviving is her husband of 31 years, Ralph Mancuso Jr.; children, Katie Mancuso, Drexel Hill, PA; Ralph Mancuso III and Rachel Mancuso, both of Kingston; extended family; sister, Janice Amos, nephews, Ryan and Jeff Amos, and a niece, Sarah Amos, all of Nanticoke; and several Sharpe family members.
