Daniel Stankiewicz, 78, of Preston Street, Ashley, died March 27, 2014.

He was born in Ashley on May 1, 1935, the son of the late Bart and Helen (Chiakowski) Stankiewicz. Danny was a graduate of the former Ashley High School, where he was an active participant in sports, playing basketball, baseball and football. He received an academic scholarship to Scranton University where played football and he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education with a specialization in English. He was employed as a school teacher, working with remedial students, for the Matawan High School, Red Bank, N.J., for 35 years. Danny was also affiliated with the Athletic/Recreational Department at the high school.

After retiring, he returned to Ashley, where he loved his daily trips to the casino, and especially his horseraces.

Surviving are brother, Bart Stankiewicz, Las Vegas, Nev.; sisters, Rita Gluc, Ashley; and Theresa Flannery and brother-in-law, James Flannery, Mount Pocono; nephews, Sean Flannery, Mount Pocono; and Eric Flannery and his wife, Melissa, Grover, N.C.; nieces, Dr. Jennifer Townsley, Gilbert, Ariz.; Carrie Ann Mollenkopf and her husband, Michael, Mesa, Ariz.; Jolynn Thomas and her husband, Jeff, Exton; and Stacey Zelinka, Mountain Top. Great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday from George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley. A Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Leo's/Holy Rosary Church, 33 Manhattan St., Ashley. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Monday.

Monetary donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Danny's name.
