Thomas Bernard Velgus, 80, of Plymouth passed into the hands of the Lord on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

Born Jan. 14, 1934, in Larksville, he was the son of the late Andrew and Anna Krehely Velgus.

He was a graduate of St. Vincent's High School, Class of 1951, and a member of All Saints Parish, Plymouth. He had been a member of St. Stephen's Church Holy Name Society and held the office of president for more than 10 years. He was also a lector for more than 40 years.

Tom was a U.S. Army veteran and received an honorable discharge at the rank of corporal.

On June 27, 1982, he was commissioned as a Eucharistic minister by Bishop James C. Timilin (emeritus), at St. Ignatius Church, Kingston. He also served 22 years at St. Stephen's Church. He greatly enjoyed offering communion to the homebound weekly on Sundays. The joy they showed when he came made him feel the blessing of the Lord.

He was a member of Plymouth Council 984 of the Knights of Columbus. In 1966, he was exemplified with the fourth degree with a class of 200 candidates at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Allentown. At that time, he became a fourth-degree member of Assembly 925 in Wilkes-Barre.

Prior to his retirement in 1999, he was employed by the Luzerne County Correctional Facility as commissary manager. Prior to this, he was employed by Alta Products for more than 32 years, working his way to the position of purchasing agent.

Tom was preceded in death by his infant brother, Donald; brothers, Michael, Andrew and John Velgus; and sisters, Veronica Velgus, Josephine Wentzel and Mary Roskowicz.

Surviving are his brother, Joseph, Plymouth; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many friends.

Tom will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday from S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 W. Main St., Plymouth, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in All Saints Parish, Plymouth.

Interment will be in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Lehman Township.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.
