John J. Banashefski, 87, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre Township on April 1, 1927, a son of the late John and Mary Kostak Banashefski.
John was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School. He was an Army veteran, serving with the 382nd Military Police Battalion during World War II.
John was a member of the Boilermakers Union and he was employed for many years by the Superior Combustion Co., Wilkes-Barre.
He was a member of St. Anthony's/St. George's Maronite Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre. John was also a member of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Ellis Banashefski, in 2008; and by his son, John Banashefski, in 2004. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Banashefski, and by a brother, Joseph Andrulavage.
John is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Matreselva, Forty Fort; son, Richard Banashefski and his wife, Kathy, Ashley; brothers, George Banashefski and his wife, Loretta, Wilkes-Barre Township; and Leonard Banashefski, Wilkes-Barre Township; sisters, Mary Kish and her husband, Michael, Ocean City, Md.; and Margie Dorish, Plains Township; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. His pastor, the Rev. Hanna Karam, will officiate.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
