Rosemary (Cookie) McCarthy, 66, of the Hilldale section of Plains Township, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at her home of complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Born in the Miners Mills section of Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Josephine Bajerski Serafin.

Rosemary attended Ss. Peter and Paul Grade School, Plains Township, was a graduate of James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1965, and the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1968.

She was employed for 40 years as a registered nurse in obstetrics and later case management by Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Cookie was a longtime member of St. Dominic's Church, Parsons, currently St. Benedict's Parish.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. John Prater, Dr. Scott Friedenberg, the ALS Clinic Team at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

Surviving are her husband of 45 years, John McCarthy, Hilldale; sons, Christopher and his wife, Kyle, Fairfield, Conn.; and Brian and his wife, Kim, Mechanicsburg; grandsons, Colin, Gavin and Dylan; brothers, Joseph Serafin and his wife, Ellen, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Edward Serafin and his wife, Bridget, Wilkes-Barre; sisters, Dorothy Yelland and her husband, Thomas, Wilkes-Barre; and Kathleen Serafin, Tannersville; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday from Corcoran Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Benedict's Parish/St. Dominic's Church, 155 Austin Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Joseph A. Kearney, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
