Elmer Lohman Jr., 89, of East Ridge Street, Nanticoke, passed away Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Nanticoke.

Born in Nanticoke on June 8, 1925, he was the son of the late Elmer Lohman Sr. and Elizabeth Klock. He attended Nanticoke schools and graduated from Nanticoke High School, Class of 1943. As a youth, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 403, Nanticoke, and attained the rank of Eagle Scout, having earned 33 merit badges.

On Oct. 27, 1944, he married his high-school sweetheart, Alta May Kathryn Dudeck. They were married for 61 years until Alta passed away in 2006.

Elmer served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a supply clerk with the 610th AAF Base Unit and received an honorable discharge in 1946.

During his lifetime, he worked at the Liberty Silk Mill, Nanticoke; Scouton-Lee Lumber Co., Nanticoke and Wilkes-Barre; Emerald Green Lawncare, Nanticoke; and Swithers Heating Oil Service, Nanticoke, retiring in 1987.

He was an active member of Zion United Church of Christ, Nanticoke, for more than 70 years, having served on the church Consistory as deacon and elder. He was the president of the Consistory, Sunday school superindendent for more than 25 years, a member of the seinor choir and a Youth Felloship advisor. He was a 50-year member of Nanticoke Masonic Lodge 332 and American Legion Post 350.

In addition to his parents and wife, Alta, he was preceded in death by his brother, Earl W. Lohman Sr., and sister-in-law, Mary Lohman.

Surviving are his sons, the Rev. Barry M. Lohman, Nanticoke; and Kevin D. Lohman and his wife, Doreen, Nanticoke; grandchildren, Jamie Lohman, Nanticoke; Erin Rakofski, Ashley; Janell Ulichney and her husband, Dustin, Nanticoke; and Keira Lohman, Temecula, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Devon, Gabby, Alyssa and Leah; several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Earl W. Lohman Funeral Home Inc., 14 W. Green St., Nanticoke.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion United Church of Christ, 40 W. Main St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. Barry M. Lohman officiating. There will be a viewing at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

His final resting place will be in Hanover Green Cemetery, Hanover Township.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in Elmer's name to the Zion United Church of Christ Heating Fund.

The family would like to thank the staff of Birchwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kind care that Elmer received in his short stay there.
