Joan M. Karlheim of Marlboro Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born July 7, 1931, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Josephine Wilga Kendra, a graduate of GAR High School, Class of 1949, and a graduate of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1952.

Joan was formerly employed as a registered nurse in Philadelphia and Wyoming Valley Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. Prior to retiring she was in business with her husband, Denis (Bill), at Stanton Pharmacy, Wilkes-Barre.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre, and a former member of St. Therese Church, Wilkes-Barre, and their choir. She was also a Cub Scout den mother in the 1960s.

She loved to sing and play the piano, attending to her garden, quilting and card clubs and also interior design and painting. She had a special passion to cook and bake for her loving family, especially during the Christmas holiday.

She and her beloved husband, Denis (Bill), celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary in September 2013.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her children, Denis Karlheim III, Wilkes-Barre; Michael Karlheim, Philadelphia; Kathy Karlheim, Costa Mesa, Calif.; and Laurie and her husband, Steffan Otto, Egg Harbor City, N.J.; grandchildren, Sarah, Lydia, Hayden and Hannah Karlheim and Nathan, Lexi and Evan Otto; sisters, Mary Bozinko, Ashley; Carol Archbald, Neptune, N.J.; and Ann (Dolly) Wallace, Newtonville, Mass.; brother, Michael Kendra; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Kendra.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Monday from Mamary-Durkin Funeral Service, 59 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be held in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
