James Francis Bannon of Pittston passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014.

Born in Scranton on March 22, 1918, he was the son of the late Julia and Francis Gaffney Bannon. He celebrated his 96th birthday on March 22, 2014.

A 1936 graduate of Pittston High School, he went on to serve our country with honor and distinction as a member of the U.S. Army.

He was a partner with Bright Construction Co. for more than 46 years. He was a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers. He was recently honored with a 75-year Service Award.

After retiring, he worked part-time for Riley and Associates.

He was honored by the Greater Pittston Sons of St. Patrick with the W. Francis Swingle Award. He served as a member of the Pittston Area School Board and the Pittston Planning Commission. He was a fourth-degree knight, past president of the Knights of Columbus, Pittston, and past president of the Greater Pittston Sons of St. Patrick and was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Bright; brother, Kenneth; stepmother, Mary Finneran; stepbrother, Joseph; stepsister, Angela; and son-in-law, Gerard F. Gallagher.

Surviving are his daughters, Ann Gallagher, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Kathy Sulima, Pittston; four grandsons, James Gallagher (Denise), Carmel, Ind.; Gerard Gallagher (Kari), Granger, Ind.; James Sulima (Cindy), Pittston; and Joseph Sulima (Kate), White Plains, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services have been entrusted to Graziano Funeral Home Inc., Pittston Township.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. John's Evangelist Church, William Street, Pittston. Family and friends attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church on Friday morning.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.
