John H. Rider of Carneys Point, N.J., and formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Christiana Hospital, Newark, Del.

He was born June 28, 1941, raised in Wilkes-Barre, and was a longtime resident of Carneys Point, N.J. He was the son of the late Charles A. and Elizabeth Born Rider Sr.

He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Rider; brother, Charles A. Rider Jr. (Patricia), Soldotna, Alaska; sister, Ann Nancy Fedor, Kingston; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, family and friends.

John was a former member of St. Nicholas Church, where he served as an altar boy. While growing up he played baseball and basketball.

John graduated from St. Nicholas High School, Wilkes-Barre, Class of 1960. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., he was stationed in various locations such as Pedricktown, N.J. (while serving at the DOD in Pedricktown, N.J., he met his wife, the late Lois P. Maxwell Rider), Korea, Grafenwöhr, Germany, Fort Meade, Md., Fort Riley, Kan., and El Paso, Texas. After 22 years John retired from the Army and worked for YOH Security, Salem Nuclear Plant and Mobil Oil, Paulsboro, N.J.

John and Lois shared 48 years of marriage before her passing on April 6, 2013.

In addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by his sisters, Joan Zwiebel, Mary Claire Wesneski and Patricia Carle; brother, George Rider; niece, Patti Ann Carle; nephew, Christopher Rider; and his little buddies, Jake, Mikey and Teddy.

John was a Philadelphia Phillies fan and enjoyed watching and listening to the Phillies baseball games. He had a kind heart and was a fighter until the end. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, family and friends.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Ashcraft Funeral Home, 740 S. Broadway, Pennsville, N.J. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in Salem County Veterans Cemetery, Pilesgrove, N.J.
