Verna Diakun, 91, of the Lincoln Heights section of Taylor, died Saturday morning, Aug. 23, 2014, at Mountain View Care Center, where she had been a resident for the past few months. Her husband, John, died June 6, 1958.

Born and educated in Taylor, daughter of the late Nickolis and Susie Kubick Hreben, Verna dedicated her life to her family, and was a loving caregiver to her parents as they grew old. She enjoyed the holidays, cooking, baking and visiting with family and friends.
She was a parishioner of St. George's Orthodox Church and a former member of the altar society.
The center of her life was her grandchildren, and she treasured her great-grandchildren.
Surviving are a son, Michael and wife, Joan, Mountain Top; son-in-law, John Angeli, Old Forge; three grandchildren, Krista Palma and husband, Mark, Old Forge; and Michael and Kyle Diakun, Mountain Top; and two great-grandchildren, Dominick and Angelina Palma.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lou Angeli; four brothers, George, John, Michael and Steve Hreben; and four sisters, Anna Hreben, Mary Stanko, Margaret Pepsin and Susan Haberak.
The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday from Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by services at noon in St. George's Orthodox Church, 743 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
