Walter J. Cooper, 88, of Sheatown, Newport Twp., passed away peacefully Saturday morning, April 14, 2018, at his home, surrounded by his loving family following a period of declining health.

Born June 17, 1929, in Larksville, he was a son of the late John and Veronica Motyka Cooper. He graduated from Larksville High School and enlisted with the U.S. Army serving with Headquarters, 6th detachment, 2nd Signal Service Battalion in Germany as an intercept operator following World War II. He attained the rank of Corporal and earned the Army of Occupation Medal.

He married Sylvia Kotch on June 26, 1954, and together raised their family, residing at several locations where he was employed by Western Union for 25 years, however, he is best known as a waiter employed by The Centre Inn, Newport Twp., for over 35 years.

He was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, Nanticoke.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Shatkoski.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Sylvia, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage; children, Mark G. Cooper, Nanticoke; Diane Surdel and husband, Joe, Wilkes-Barre; and Cheryl Lewis, Hanover Twp.; grandchildren, Mark G. Cooper Jr., Nuangola; and Joseph Surdel, Wilkes-Barre; and a brother, John Cooper and wife, Jean, West Wyoming.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad St.,, Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, main site, 520 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke, with the Rev. James R. Nash as celebrant.

Viewing and a period of visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Walter's family is forever grateful for the compassionate and loving care provided by the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, and suggest, in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory be made to that organization at 600 Baltimore Drive, Suite 7, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
