Donald R. Alonzo, of Hanover Twp., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born Jan. 7, 1948, in Iselin, N.J., Don was the son of the late Saternino and Pearl Tate Alonzo. Donald was a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, Iselin, N.J.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having been stationed at Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico. Residing in Wyoming Valley, Don obtained an associate degree in nursing from Luzerne County Community College.

He worked in many aspects of nursing including emergency services, critical care, home health, psychnursing and nursing administration. Prior to retirement, he was a nursing supervisor at Geisinger South, Wilkes-Barre. Don was a tissue donor.

He previously served as a member of the Hanover Twp. Ambulance Association and was a disaster nurse for the local chapter of the American Red Cross. He served as a volunteer umpire of the Hanover Green Little League and was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.

Don enjoyed the companionship of his dog "Molly."

He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Alonzo, and a sister-in-law, Susan Davis.

He is survived by his wife, the former Nancy A. Staniorski, sons; Joseph A. (Kristen), Easton; and Michael A. (Kelly), Hanover Twp.; grandsons, Anthony, Jayson and Samuel Alonzo; sisters, Jean Orcutt (Harold), Homosassa, Fla.; and Susan Kolchun, (Charles), Lanse; sister-in-law, Amelia Alonzo, Harrison, N.J.; brother-in-law, William Davis, Warrior Run; sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Brian Gill, Wilkes-Barre; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Don's life will be held Wednesday at Costello's Restaurant, Edwardsville.

Friends may visit with the family from 5:30 until 8 p.m.

There will be readings and remembrances at 6 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

The family asks that any memorial remembrances in Don's name be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society 1501 Reedsdale Street, Suite 105, Pittsburgh, PA 15233 or the American Red Cross, 71 N. Franklin St., Suite 110, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
