Joseph A. Maraski of Georgetown passed away Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, peacefully at Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre, surrounded by his living family.
Joe was born in Laurel Run, attended Wilkes-Barre Township schools and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
He retired from Conrail in 1988 and was a member of St. Leo's/Holy Rosary Parish, Ashley. He was a former member of St. Joseph's Church, Wilkes-Barre Township, until its closing.
Mr. Maraski was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Bridget Maraski; infant daughter, Beverly; son, Robert Maraski; and sisters, Mary Andrejewski and Katie Wiernusz.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret (Peggy) Collins; daughter, Barbara Turinski and her husband, Tom, Laurel Run; grandchildren, Martin and Bobby Maraski, Dorothy Cooper, Tom Jr., Joel and Justin Turinski; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
A military funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday from Lehman Family Funeral Service Inc., 689 Hazle Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Leo's Church, 33 Manhattan St., Ashley. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
