Joan Marie Etzel, 81, of Wilkes-Barre passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

She was born in Scranton on May 24, 1932, a daughter of the late John and Martha Welenz Malakin.
Joan was formerly employed as a payroll clerk by the American Cigar Co., Mountain Top.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wilkes-Barre, and she formerly was active with the Cub Scouts, serving as a den mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick W. Etzel Jr., in 1975.
Surviving are her son, Frederick W. Etzel III, Wilkes-Barre; brothers, John Malakin, Harrisburg; Robert Malakin, Wilkes-Barre; and Paul Malakin, Owego, N.Y.; niece, Karen Mullen, and nephews, David, Sean and Scott Malakin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Peter Kuritz, pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, will officiate.
Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.
