Gretchen G. Blumenstock, 85, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at a Topeka hospital. She was born May 15, 1927, in Fremont, NE, the daughter of G.G. and Frances Schroeder Grefe. She graduated from Fremont High School in Fremont, Nebraska. Gretchen had resided in Topeka since 1944. She was employed as an office manager for the Kansas AFL-CIO for 45 years before retiring on October 1, 1989. She was a member of St. John s Evangelical Lutheran Church for 68 years and was active with the Lutheran Braille Workers Work Center No. 31. Gretchen married George Blumenstock on January 7, 1951, in Topeka. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1998. Survivors include her sister, Phyllis Morgan of Kansas City, MO, a niece Fran Giardinelli and her husband Dan Giardinelli of LaVerne, CA, a nephew Jim Morgan of Denver, CO and a niece, Nancy Fry of Overland Park, KS plus several grand- and great-grand nephews and nieces. Services will be held at 2pm on March 1st at St. John s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Gretchen will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 1pm -2pm on March 1st at the Church.
