Joe Richter, 88, of Topeka passed away, Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was born April 16, 1924 to Frank and Carrie Richter at Waverly, Kansas. Joe joined the United States Army Air Corps at age 18 and served in the China-Burma- India Theatre during World War II. He served on the Topeka Police Department for 29 years, retiring 1978 with the rank of Captain. Joe owned and operated Richter Funeral Escort Service in Topeka for nearly 30 years. He and his wife Mildred are members of First United Methodist Church in Topeka. He was a faithful servant to God and his community. Joe married Mildred Irwin on Sept 24, 1950. Joe and Mildred enjoyed traveling during their life together. He is survived by his wife Mildred Richter of Topeka; sons Dennis Richter (Jan) of Topeka and Steve Richter of Topeka; five grandchildren, Matt Richter (Beth) of Fountain, Colorado, Melissa Lewis (Nolan) of Tonganoxie, KS, Daniel Richter of Topeka, Corey Richter of Topeka and Kelly Richter of Mayetta; three great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin Richter of Gold Canyon, AZ and sister, Jean Devlin (George) of Topeka. He was preceded in death his parents, Frank and Carrie; brother, Tech Sgt. Eldon Richter killed in action in 1943; and a sister, Gladys Mullen in 1999. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at First United Methodist Church. Following the service interment and military honors will be conducted at Prairie Home Cemetery. He will lie in state Tuesday afternoon at Davidson Funeral Home from 12-4:30 pm. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday evening at the church.
