William H. Bill Michel, of Manhattan, died peacefully Wednesday morning, March 27, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. He was 4 days shy of his 82nd birthday, which would have been on Easter Sunday. Bill was born on March 31, 1931, in Dodge City, KS. He was the eldest child of William and Elsie (McCarter) Michel. Mr. Michel was a graduate of Garden City High School, class of '49. He attended one year of college at Garden City Community College before enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1950. He spent most of his 4 years in Germany. Following his military service, Bill attended and graduated from Kansas State University in 1958 along with his brother Don. After graduating from KSU, Bill had several jobs until 1962 when he and his business partner, Harold Ross started a grading and excavating company. Ross and Michel Construction/Development were in business over 25 years and also owned Crestwood Apartments until 1991 when he retired. He was able to enjoy retirement by attending countless ball games, walking many miles per week, working tirelessly around the house and yard and enjoying his grandkids. You could usually find Bill in a coffee group around Manhattan, or taking his recycling in to Howie's. Children all over northeast Kansas could also benefit by meeting Bill and receiving a gold dollar. His generosity was truly unmatched. During retirement, Bill and Harold donated a tract of land along Stagg Hill Road to the Audubon Society. Bill married Joanne Cripe on January 26, 1958 in Garden City. She survives of the home. Other survivors include three children: Vickie Slife and her husband Curtis, Maricopa, AZ, Doug Michel, Peoria, AZ and Julie Lady and her husband Richard, Topeka, KS. One brother, Don Michel and his wife Paula, Kermit, TX, one sister Pauline Dater and her husband Ed, Oklahoma City, OK. Six grandchildren: Derek and Troy Slife, John and Sydnie Michel, and Grace and Mitchell Lady. Bill also has 19 nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Roberta Shirkey in 1977, brother Darrell Michel in 1998, brother-in-law Keith Cripe in 2004, sister-in-law Gladys Cripe in 2011, sister-in-law Marjorie Rost in 2011, and nephew Anthony Michel in 2002.
