Gene C. Martin Gene C. Martin, 92, formerly of Topeka, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 in Paola, Kansas. He was born May 16, 1922 in Topeka, the son of Kenneth and Mary Alice Nicolay Martin. Gene graduated from Topeka High School and Washburn College. He served during WWII as a 3rd Class pharmacist's mate. One of his duties while in the service was to select a headquarters for U.S. operations in Nagasaki shortly after the bombing occurred. Gene's wife of 66 years, Marie Martin, preceded him in death on October 14, 2010. Playing football on Topeka High's state championship team, playing football for Washburn, building his own home and serving on Washburn's Board of Regents were some of his favorite life experiences. Although Gene practiced a number of professions including pharmaceutical representative, realtor and Mayor of Topeka, no occupation was more dear to his heart than that of father and grandfather. Grandpa Dude, as he was affectionately known, is survived by Blythe, Brett, Blake, Brena, Michaela, Merrill and Ross and three great-grandchildren. Other survivors include two daughters, Marta (Dean) Gerstenberger, Flagstaff, Arizona and Melanie (Cliff) Martin, M.D., Overland Park, Kansas and a sister, Patricia Martin, Tecumseh, Kansas. A private family celebration of Gene's life will be held at a future date. Condolences may be shared with the family at
