ONAGA Sadie Marie Marten, 97, of Onaga, passed away Monday, August 31, 2009 at the Community Hospital in Onaga. She was born January 11, 1912 on a farm near Onaga, the first of seven children of Clarence and Violet Grossnickle Fairbanks. Sadie was baptized and confirmed on March 21, 1948 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church at Duluth, where she is still a member. She stayed with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Grossnickle to attend Onaga High School, and graduated Salutatorian of her class in 1929. She married Richard H. Dick Marten on July 26, 1947 at the home of his brother, E.T. Marten, in Hope, Kansas. He died on January 26, 1997. Sadie worked for 40 years for Kansas Power and Light in Onaga, from 1936 until her retirement in 1977. She was also a bookkeeper for her husband at Marten Motor Co. of Onaga. They won a Ford Motor Co. trip to New York, London and Paris. She and Dick were members of the National Campers and Hikers and spent 25 years camping all across the USA and twice in Canada. She was also a member of the KPL Retirees Club at Manhattan, The Family Campers & RVers, Kansas Campers, the Dusters Camping Club and the Onaga Senior Center. She loved to quilt and to travel, having taken over 40 bus tours. Sadie was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn Fairbanks and Douglas Fairbanks, and two sisters, Lucille Bell and Dorothy Seybold. Survivors include two sisters. Rheva McKee, Salina, and Hazel Wyss, Onaga; two sisters-in-law, Olga Fairbanks and Delta Marten, both of Onaga; a brother-in-law, Clyde Seybold, Rye, CO; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 5th at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Onaga Cemetery. Sadie will lie in state Thursday and Friday at the Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga where a Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by visitation. She will also lie in state an hour before service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Onaga Senior Center, Golden Acres Activity Fund, or the Onaga High School Scholarship Fund, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O.
