James Deal Bean, 87, of Topeka, Kansas passed away on Monday, December 6, 2010 at a nursing facility in Topeka. James Deal was born on February 18, 1923 in Edmond, Kansas the son of James Earl and Mattie Strickland Bean. He graduated from Edmond High School in Norton County, Kansas. James joined the U.S. Army during World War II and served oversees in the Korean War where he received three Bronze Star Service Awards. James married his wife Shirley on December 1, 1952 and they were happily married for 54 years before Shirley passed away on October 19, 2006. James worked over 30 years of dedicated service and eventually retired from IDEAL Truck Lines, a trucking company, based out of Norton. After retirement James and Shirley moved to Topeka, Kansas to be closer to two sons and grandchildren. James was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in by his step-son Ronald Salladay, his brother Kenneth Bean, and his sister Iris Bean Pfister. Survivors include his son: Rick Bean and his wife Pam of Topeka and their children: Tyler and Toree: daughter in-law Donna Salladay of Manhattan; grand daughter: Rona Kustanborter and her husband Darrell of Independence, Kansas; grand daughter: Lisa McCurdy and her husband Marc of Manhattan; grand daughter: Suzanne Lundberg of Manhattan, Kansas; and many other family and friends. Private graveside inurnment services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2010 (1:00 p.m.) at the Norton Cemetery for family. James was very complimentary of the nursing staff that served him during his recent stays in the hospital and would like memorial contributions directed to the Nursing Scholarship Fund and mailed to Washburn University Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar Ave, Topeka, KS, 66604.
