Opal Douglas

NETAWAKA Opal L. Douglas, 88, of Netawaka, died Friday, October 7, 2011 at the Stormont-Vail hospital in Topeka. She was born December 27, 1922 at Salem, IL, the 10th of 12 children born to Henry and Myrtle Stowers Harmon. Opal was a member of the Netawaka United Methodist Church and the Womens Circle at the church. She married Harold Gene Douglas whom she met in Wyoming. They moved back to Kansas in the early 1950s. They farmed north of Mayetta before moving to Netawaka, where they operated a caf and garage west of town. Opal worked at the Netawaka School system as a cook until it closed. She then worked at the Jackson Heights School as a cook until she retired. Opal was preceded in death by her loving husband Gene on June 19, 1987. She was also preceded in death by her mother and father, all her siblings, her son-in-law, Janos Kuti, and her granddaughter, Laura. Survivors include her daughter Loretta Kuti, Netawaka, and her family; her brother-in-law, Morris Douglas and wife Neva, Netawaka; her sister-in-law, Stella Dibbern and husband Ray, Circleville; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 10th, at the Netawaka United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Netawaka Cemetery. Opal will lie in state at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton, where family and friends will meet from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
