William (Bill) S. Cooper, Jr., 66, of Ozawkie KS, passed away Oct. 23, 2011 at Stormont Vail Hospital. He was born Feb. 12, 1945 in Topeka, the son of William S. Cooper, Sr. and Blanche L. (Marmie) Cooper. Bill was in the US Navy from 1965 to 1968 aboard the USS Wright Presidential Flagship based in Norfolk VA. Bill went to Belvoir Grade School and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1963. Bill was known in the 50s and 60s for his 1930 Chevy Coupe and his cruising from Allens Drive-In to the Delta Drive-In looking for someone to drag race. Bill was well known for his mechanical ability and he owned Coopers Auto Garage in Kiowa KS in the 80s. Bill was honored to have worked at Howard Hughes Air Craft in Culver City CA from 1977 to 1982. Bill worked for the Topeka Police Dept. as a civilian in the property evidence room, the impound lot and TPD wrecker driver. Bill was a member of the Topeka Racing Pigeon Club and a member of the American Legion, Ozawkie. Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret K. Walters Cooper; three children, Sherry Lynn Cook (Jerry), Berryton, Marcus Blake Cooper (Shannon), Wichita, and Bryan Wesley Cooper (Karen), Bernalillo NM; sister, Wanda Lee Lampe, Fullerton CA; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a nephew; and many loving cousins and friends. Graveside service, with military honors, will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the gazebo at Topeka Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the www.woundedwarrior project.org.
