Robert E. Hern Robert E. Hern, 81, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at Stormont Vail Hospital. Robert was born in Hollywood CA on September 20, 1932, the son of J. Emerson and Neva M. (Skelton) Hern. He attended Burrton High School in Burrton KS. Robert joined the Air Force where he served in the Korean War. After serving in the Air Force for four years, he joined the Air National Guard in Hutchinson where he was a control tower operator. When Hutchinson Air National Guard Base closed, the unit was moved to Forbes Field in Topeka. Robert was a widely known throughout the Air National Guard as a specialist in military pay. He provided expertise to many Air National Guard Units, one of which was the Kentucky Air National Guard; in appreciation, Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown, conferred the designation of Honorable Kentucky Colonel to Robert. He completed 30 years of service, retiring in 1990. Robert married the love of his life, Reva F. Edwards, on April 4, 1953. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage and many activities together. She survives. Robert was a member of the Masons and Crestview United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Reva; sons, Scott Hern, Bonner Springs KS, Brad (Chardy) Hern, Topeka; grandchildren, Jeff, Stephanie, Drew, Mike and Nick. He was preceded in death by his father and mother. Family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Crestview United Methodist Church; memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Crestview United Methodist Church, sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka KS 66614.
