Donald Swede Calander Donald Swede Calander, 92, of Topeka, passed away peacefully at home on November 16, 2013. Donald was born October 20, 1921, in Stanley, Isanti County MN to Gust Algot and Ella Sophia (Norberg) Calander. Prior to World War II, Donald worked in the Civil Conservation Corps in Deer River MN. In 1942 he enlisted in the Merchant Marines, serving until 1945. Donald married Loretta Smith on October 22, 1947 in Emporia KS. He worked for Don Conroy Contractors for 37 years as a foundation foreman. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and charter member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Donald is survived by his wife, Loretta; four children, Rhonda Calander, Regina Gabrielson, Rose Mary (Alan) Whitford, and John (Susan) Calander, all of Topeka; six grandchildren, Eric (Theresa) and Leif (Amy) Gabrielson, all of Lawrence, David Whitford, Phoenix AZ, Laura (Jeff) King, Jacob and Elizabeth Calander all of Topeka; six great-grandchildren Connor, Evan, Max, Maggie Gabrielson, all of Lawrence, Adelaide King, Topeka, Annabel Whitford, of Klamath Falls OR; as well as many nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, three sisters, three grandchildren and one son-in-law. The family would like to thank all the wonderful caring people at Mission Township Fire Department, St. Francis, Midland Hospice, and Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home who cared for Donald. You were a great blessing to us. May God bless each of you abundantly. Visitation will be Thursday 5-7 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home with Divine Mercy Devotion at 6:30 and Knights of Columbus Rosary to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ the King Church with burial at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
