Arless Russell Akin, 90, of Campbellsville, died at 5:56 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2014, in Campbellsville.
Son of the late Robert Ellis Akin and Carrie Bale Akin, he was born May 11, 1923, in Green County, Kentucky.
He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Southside Christian Church.
He was a welder and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 183 in Lexington, Ky., for some 60 years, a Taylor County Sheriff from 1974-1977 and a lifelong farmer and breeder of Hereford cattle and a member of the American Hereford Association.
He was on the first basketball team and the first baseball team at Taylor County High School. He was an avid amateur boxer and great all-around athlete.
He was a member of the Pitman Masonic Lodge #124 F & AM.
He married Jane Coleman Allender on Feb. 14, 1958. She preceded him in death Feb. 24, 2003.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Akin and his wife, Jewell, of Greensburg, Kentucky, and Rocky Akin and his wife, Lori, of Campbellsville; two daughters, Melissa Mallard and her husband, Elliott, of Ocala, Florida, and Merry Beth Gold and her husband, Brad, of Greenville, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren, Niki Akin and Andrew Akin of Greensburg, Matthew Mallard, Jared Mallard and Elliott Mallard II of Ocala, Carrie Gold, Evan Gold and Mason Gold of Greenville and Rachael Dobson and Zachary Akin of Campbellsville; three great-grandchildren, Brianna Dobson, Kaine Mallard and Grayson Mallard; two nieces, Connie Clem and her husband, Fred, of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Donna Smith and her husband, Dr. Roger Smith of Columbia, Kentucky; and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Geneva Moss on Sept. 10, 2012, and Virginia Caulk on Aug. 11, 2013.
Funeral was Saturday, April 26, at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville. The Rev. Thomas Gold officiated.
Burial was in Campbellsville Memorial Gardens.
