James F. Graves, 89, of Campbellsville, died at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2013, in Campbellsville.
Son of the late W. Ernest Graves and Nelle Burdette Graves, he was born on Jan. 22, 1924, in Taylor County.
He professed faith in Christ and was a member of Campbellsville Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served his country honorably in the United States Army Air Force. He graduated as a fighter pilot and served with the 8th Air Force in Europe as a P-51 pilot.
He joined the Army National Guard and was activated during the Korean Conflict, serving with the regular Army in Germany for three years.
He accepted a full-time position with the National Guard and retired as Colonel of the Kentucky Army National Guard after 36 years of service, with 30 of those years with the Kentucky Army National Guard.
He was a graduate of the basic and advanced courses in artillery at Ft. Sill, Okla., the Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and the Inspector General and Auditor General Course in Washington, D.C.
He graduated from Campbellsville College when it was a two-year college.
He was married to Mary Jewell Vaughn on Jan. 10, 1950. She survives. Mary Jewell joined him in Germany and their daughter, Virginia, was born in an Army hospital in Nuremburg, Germany.
Survivors also include a daughter, Virginia Alicia Graves of Clarksville, Tenn.; a nephew, Dr. Eugene H. Shively and his wife, Susan, of Campbellsville; a great-nephew, Alexander G. Shively and his wife, Christina E., of Campbellsville; a great-niece, Dr. Victoria Shively Graham and her husband, Michael L., of Louisville, Ky.; and many other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Graves Shively on March 23, 2013.
Funeral was Thursday, July 25, at Parrott & Ramsey Funeral Home in Campbellsville. The Rev. John Chowning officiated.
Burial was in Brookside Cemetery with full military honors by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard.
